The basic statistical calculator is really easy to use. Here are the
simple, step-by-step instructions:
I) Prepare the Calculator
When you look at the calculator, you see one or two numbers above the
keyboard. The number on the left, which is always present, indicates the
number of data points in the currently stored sample. Any number that
appears on the right is either a number that you have entered, or the
result of a calculation.
|
|
Use the CLR button to prepare the calculator. Press the button
once to remove the result of a calculation or other value from the right
side of the view window. Press the same key again to discard a previous
data sample. When the calculator is ready to receive a new sample, the
value on the upper left corner is set to zero.
II) Enter Data Points
Entering data points is easy. Just key in a value and press <Enter>.
The calculator keeps track of how many data points have been entered and
displays the sample size in the top left corner. You can enter as many as
fifty data points in a single sample.
 |
III) Calculate Sample Statistics
- press the SUM key to calculate the total of all sample data points.
- press the Mn key to calculate the sample mean.
- press the Md key to calculate the sample median.
- press the SDs key to calculate the sample standard deviation.
- press the SDp key to calculate the population standard deviation.
|
IV) Retrieve Your Sorted Sample
The calculator sorted your data points for you when you calculated the
median. You can retrieve the sample, one point at a time, by repeatedly
pressing the CLR key and then the + key. Each time that
you repeat this sequence one value will be removed from the sample and
displayed in the view window.
The RPN notation is a powerful technique for
performing complex calculations. You don't need to know anything about
RPN notation to calculate statistical values with the basic statistical
calculator, but if you'd like to get the best use of this powerful
calculator, my RPN tutorial will teach you
how to use
an RPN calculator.
