Tarzan of the Apes (1912)
Edgar Rice
Burroughs wrote many separate series of novels, each creating
a new world of adventure. ERB's series include the
Caprona trilogy, the Mars series,
the Venus series and the Pellucidar
series. But the most successful of these is the Tarzan series, which
was brought to the big screen in several series of films, beginning with
silent-era films in which Buster Crabbe played the role of Tarzan. The most
successful film series starred olympic swimming champion
Johnny Weissmuller
as Tarzan with Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane.
The introductory volume in the Tarzan series is Tarzan of the Apes,
ERB's third novel that was first published in 1912. It is the story of a
young English Lord who is marooned upon the west coast of Africa by the
mutinous crew of the sailing vessel Fuwalda upon which the young Lord
Greystoke was traveling with his pregnant wife. After being abandoned upon
the wild coastline of west Africa, and building a small cabin on the shore,
Lord Greystoke's wife gives birth to a son, who becomes an orphan shortly
after his first birthday. But the baby is then adopted by a female ape who
raises him as her own.
As the child grows, he visits the cabin often, though he has no knowledge of
who built the cabin or his own origins. There he finds some picture books
that his father had brought to teach his anticipated child, and, through the
use of those picture books, the orphaned child learns to read a language that
he cannot speak.
One day a second ship comes to the remote shoreline where the young ape-man
has become master of the forest. This ship brings another party of castaways,
again to be abandoned by a mutinous crew. The party to be abandoned is the
party of Professor Archimedes Q. Porter who is accompanied by his secretary
(Samuel T. Philander), the young nephew of the previously mentioned Lord
Greystoke, a servant named Esmeralda and Porter's own daughter Jane. In the
days following their abandonment, the Porter party becomes involved with the
white ape-man of the forest in a manner that will bring Tarzan of the Apes to
learn his own history and his claim to an English title and estate.

The most famous cinematic version of Tarzan of the Apes is Tarzan
the Ape Man, starring Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan and Maureen O'Sullivan
as Jane. In this version, Jane Porter becomes Jane Parker, Professor Porter is
transformed into the ivory trader John Parker, the ships and the mutineers have
all vanished and the movie doesn't preserve the same ending that is presented
in the book, but it still serves as the cinematic introduction of Tarzan and
Jane. With a release date in 1932, this movie was the first of the Tarzan
movies starring Johnny Weissmuller.
