A History of the Great War (1918)

This is a well-written history of the first world war, apparently produced for use in American public schools. The book begins with a description of the events of the 19th century that eventually led to the war and continue to influence events in Europe and the world. The authors are Albert E. McKinley (Professor of History, University of Pennsylvania), Charles A. Coulomb, and Armand J. Gerson. (Both Coulomb and Gerson held the title of Superintendent of Schools in Philadelphia.)

Moby Dick (1851)

Although Melville's tale of Captain Ahab and the great white whale was not the most popular of his novels in the 19th century, opinion of this novel improved after the author's death and it is now the best known of Melville's novels. The most successful video adaptation of this novel starred Gregory Peck as Ahab with a screen play co-written by Ray Bradbury.

Anna Sewell (1820-1878)

Black Beauty is the autobiography of a nineteenth century English horse. Simply written, with a vocabulary that's easily read by a young reader, it's a great story for anyone, young or old, who ever had a love for horses, and a good novel for reading aloud to children. It's the only novel that Anna Sewell ever wrote.
