William Wymark Jacobs (1863 - 1943)

In many of Jacobs' short stories, money is counted in pounds - shillings - pence. For an explanation of antiquated British monetary units, read Paul Lewis' "What's a Guinea?"
W.W. Jacobs was a native of London's East End, where he had ample access to fishermen and sailors and the tales that they told. He wrote short stories based on those tales that he heard on the wharves and sold them to magazines. Among his most famous stories was "The Monkey's Paw". Stephen King is just one of the many authors that have acknowledged the influence of Mr. Jacobs on their own work.

Many Cargoes (1894)

Many Cargoes was the first of Jacobs' works to be published in book form. It is a collection of 21 short stories. As in many of Jacobs' stories, much of the narration and dialogue is in a cockney dialect, so that words that should begin with an h, will instead begin with only an apostrophe. So that 'uman 'and should be understood to mean human hand and 'is is the genitive case of the third-person singular masculine pronoun.
