Wilkie Collins was an associate of Charles Dickens. The first 20 years of
Collins' career overlapped the last 20 years of Dickens' career and many of
Collins novels were first published as serials in Dickens' literary magazines,
Household Words and All the Year Round.
Like Edgar Allan Poe, Collins was an opium addict
(due to arthritis), and, like Poe, many of his stories tend to assume a darker
tone.
