Giacomo Casanova (1728-1795)
Giacomo
Casanova (a.k.a. Jacques Casanova de Seingalt) is most famous
for his claim to have been the lover of at least 122 different women over
the 73 years of his life. But there was much more to his life than his
romantic adventures. He was a well-educated man who served as a cleric,
a soldier, diplomat and spy for more than one of the great crowned heads
of Europe in the 18th century. He knew kings, queens, philosophers, and
Popes, and he caroused with sailors and whores. His autobiography is a rich
description of life in the 18th century.
And he recorded his rich life in a detailed biography of thirty volumes,
which you can download here.
Childhood (Volume 1 of The Life of Casanova)
WARNING: The first few chapters of this volume are a literary history
and criticism of the autobiography that follows. This stuff might be really
interesting if you happen to have a Master's degree in European History or
Renaisance Literature; but most people would rather skip over to the
autobiography, which begins about 15% into the book. After you've read
the thirty volumes of the biography and four or five other volumes of 18th
century history, THEN the introductory comments of the translators and
editors might be interesting. But, you should read the actual biographical
chapters that follow the commentary because they introduce Casanova's
relationship with witchcraft, which will be a continuing influence throughout
the rest of the biography.
If you have accidentally read some portion of the literary comments that
precede the biography, don't despair -- it does get better. -- -- There's
witchcraft, a fairie and puberty in the chapters that follow.
